The Magnetic Island Race weekend kicked off on the 3rd of September with parties and functions. However it was all hands on deck for the first day of racing. Crews getting boats prepared for a day of which had a forecast of scattered showers all along Townsville’s Coast.

Sea breezes were blowing throughout the day at five to six knots. Winds did however pick up to 8 knots for the afternoon.

Racing kicked of at 11am with a slight drama where Zen a 38 footer yacht and Quattro collided in a pre-start collision. As a result of this incident no final result can be given other than a provisional result. The current results are subject to protest.

The race committee sent the IRC, PHS, Multihulls and Cruising 1 divisions on the 22.3 nautical mile race too the Four foot Rock. While the two other divisions, Cruising 2 and Cruising Non Spinnaker headed out on a 14.2 nautical mile Cape Cleveland Race.

For the following racing divisions the breeze dropped slightly to more of a drifting speed. Half way up the first beat, 007, Jeffrey Brown’s Northshore 38NSX from the Whitsunday Sailing Club crossed ahead of Zoe, Wayne Millar’s Sydney 41 from the Townsville Yacht Club. As the fleet worked towards Cape Cleveland, the breeze was gradually building up to eight knots and Zoe was holding out Zen as the two leaders headed towards the Cape.

Dockside the smiling Leon Thomas commented ‘An interesting day. We did not have a good start, we were boxed in at the start and we sailed into a hole so we were in trouble. We pushed the boundaries and hit the sand in the shallows, we just bore away and kept going.’

Gordon Ketelby commented ‘It was a hard day, very light and local knowledge was really important. Watching the Farr 30 (Guilty Pleasures III), they obviously knew something that we did not. On the way home, the wind lifted to 12 knots and that brought the little boats up to us.’

A good handicap win for Townsville’s Guilty Pleasures III and on the spectator boat, another win with her very vocal support crew winning the ‘Best Boat Supporter Award.’

As there are still a number of protest pending final results are unable to be offered at this stage.
